Evaluation of Satellite and Reanalysis Soil Moisture Products over Southwest China Using Ground-Based Measurements

چکیده
Long-term global satellite and reanalysis soil moisture products have been available for several years. In this study, in situ soil moisture measurements from 2008 to 2012 over Southwest China are used to evaluate the accuracy of four satellite-based products and one reanalysis soil moisture product. These products are the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth observing system (AMSR-E), the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT), the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS), the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative soil moisture (CCI SM), and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Interim Reanalysis (ERA-Interim). The evaluation of soil moisture absolute values and anomalies shows that all the products can capture the temporal dynamics of in situ soil moisture well. For AMSR-E and SMOS, larger errors occur, which are likely due to the severe effects of radio frequency interference (RFI) over the test region. In general, the ERA-Interim (R = 0.782, ubRMSD = 0.035 m/m) and CCI SM (R = 0.723, ubRMSD = 0.046 m/m) perform the best compared to the other products. The accuracy levels obtained are comparable to validation results from other regions. Therefore, local hydrological applications and water resource management will benefit from the long-term ERA-Interim and CCI SM soil moisture products. OPEN ACCESS Remote Sens. 2015, 7 15730

Preliminary Evaluation of the SMAP Radiometer Soil Moisture Product over China Using In Situ Data
The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite makes coincident global measurements of soil moisture using an L-band radar instrument and an L-band radiometer. It is crucial to evaluate the errors in the newest L-band SMAP satellite-derived soil moisture products, before they are routinely used in scientific research and applications. This study represents the first evaluation of the SMAP ra...
متن کاملSoil moisture active and passive microwave products: intercomparison and evaluation over a Sahelian site
This paper presents a comparison and an evaluation of five soil moisture products based on satellite-based passive and active microwave measurements. Products are evaluated for 2005–2006 against ground measurements obtained from the soil moisture network deployed in Mali (Sahel) in the framework of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis project. It is shown that the accuracy of the soil...
متن کاملA microwave land data assimilation system: Scheme and preliminary evaluation over China
[1] To make use of satellite microwave observations for estimating soil moisture, a dual‐pass land data assimilation system (DLDAS) is developed in this paper by incorporating a dual‐pass assimilation framework into the Community Land Model version 3 (CLM3). In the DLDAS, the model state (volumetric soil moisture content) and model parameters are jointly optimized using the gridded Advanced Mic...
متن کاملUpscaling Sparse Ground-based Soil Moistureobservations Forthe Validation of Coarse-resolution Satellite Soil Moisture Products
[1] The contrast between the point-scale nature of current ground-based soil moisture instrumentation and the ground resolution (typically >10 km) of satellites used to retrieve soil moisture poses a significant challenge for the validation of data products from current and upcoming soil moisture satellite missions. Given typical levels of observed spatial variability in soil moisture fields, t...
متن کاملValidation Analysis of SMAP and AMSR2 Soil Moisture Products over the United States Using Ground-Based Measurements
Soil moisture products acquired from passive satellite missions have been widely applied in environmental processes. A primary challenge for the use of soil moisture products from passive sensors is their reliability. It is crucial to evaluate the reliability of those products before they can be routinely used at a global scale. In this paper, we evaluated the Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP...
